I am a University academic whose earlier life was spent as a stage performer and dancer. My  research focusses on 1) late-19th and early 20th century circus in Australia and New Zealand and the important trans global influences, and 2) community 'youth' and 'social' circus history of the past forty years and its social influences.

R.W. Bacon is an all-but-retired acrobatic juggler, comic dancer, and jazz banjoist/vocalist --- and a nowhere-near-retired historian and museum professional. Upon concluding 35 years in showbusiness, he transitioned to the museum field, with specialties in 17th-century New England architecture and life --- and early 20th-century vaudeville and circus. Along the way he developed the illustrated lecture exclusively for museums, libraries, and colleges, “A Vaudeville Retrospective.” This literate-and-lively program, interspersed with live performance segments, tells the story of the entertainment at the forefront of America's leisure from 1880 to 1930. Through this prism, the multiple forces that shaped American society in those years come into view, illuminating the intertwined relationship of the arts, sciences, and commerce.
R.W. Bacon is the author of eight books on multifarious topics. At present he is on staff at a New England regional preservation organization, and also serves museum clients with editorial, graphics, research, and interpretation services.

Life in the circus community
The Centre for Circus Culture (CCC) exists to promote knowledge and understanding of the circus in all its forms as a historic and valuable aspect of popular culture and as a ‘people’s art-form’ across the world.

The CCC is happy to offer speakers on the history of the circus and the way of life of the circus people, as well as performances illustrating facets of the circus arts.
